HoMedics Sound Machine – Mask the Noise Outside and Relax

homedics sound machineWhen it comes to meditation, concentration is very important. However, when you are trying to meditate it seems that any noise can grab your attention (especially if you are beginner meditator) and interrupt your focus. Not to worry, you can use a HoMedics sound machine to help you mask the noise outside so you can meditate better.

So what exactly is a sound machine?

It’s a little machine that has different built in sounds to select from. This is a great addition to your meditation room (or any place you meditate in) since it will help mask the noise outside. For example, if you finally sit down to meditate and there are some kids playing outside, you might be more concerned about what they are saying rather than focusing on your own breath. No problem, select a sound such as Ocean, and you’ll be listening to the waves crashing rather to kids fighting over who gets to throw the ball next.

There are different types of HoMedics sound machines, below follows a description of some of their top models:

Dual Alarm Digital FM Clock Radio With Relaxing Nature Sounds

Dual alarm clock with nature sounds

-This one is really cool since it’s a clock and it also has 8 different nature sounds: ocean, white noise, brook, rainforest, thunder, rain, fan, and campfire. Different sounds to help mask the noise outside.

-It has a dual alarm system. This is really handy since you could set one alarm for how long you want to meditate for. As an example let’s say if it’s currently 11:00 and you want to meditate for 20 minutes, set the alarm for 11:20. Then the second alarm can be set for the time you need to leave to go to work, pick up the kids, go to run some errands, etc. So let’s say you finished meditating at 11:20 and then you want to do some reading, you could have the second alarm go off at noon.

-A wall outlet adapter is included with this clock, so you can plug it directly to your closet outlet when meditating.

-This clock also comes with an automatic time set function that adjusts during Day Light savings time. So you don’t have to worry about having to change the time.

-Plus, at night you can use it to sleep better. Go to bed while hearing some relaxing sounds. If you get a good night’s sleep you are also more likely to be able to concentrate better the next day in your meditation session. Also, instead of waking up to an annoying beeping alarm, try setting it to wake up with a rain forest sound.

HoMedics Sound Machine for Meditation

When trying to meditate we have to deal with 2 problems, first the internal mental noise of our thoughts, and second the “outside world” noises. The internal noise will take some time to master, since it’s a personal thing. The more you train your mind, the less likely that you’ll be annoyed by external noises. However, for some people this can be challenging and it can take a long time to master.

If you can’t completely soundproof the room you are in, then you can at least mask the noise with some other pleasant sounds such as a brook, ocean waves, rain forest, etc. Or even use a neutral sound such as White Noise or Fan.

Years ago I had a HoMedics sound machine and I loved how a little machine had all these different sounds. It’s really convenient since by just pressing one button you can have a variety of relaxing sounds. The best part about it is the built in timer, since you can use it to time your meditation session. This will allow you to leave your phone in a different room and not be distracted by the noise outside or any incoming text messages, tweets, notifications, e-mails, etc.

Even if you are not meditating, you can just listen to the soothing sounds to help you relax after a long day at work. Plus, if you have problems sleeping, this can also help you sleep better since it blocks the noise outside so you are not interrupted at night.

The HoMedics sound machines listed above were selected to help with your meditation practice so can you focus more on your breathing rather than the noises outside. Check out these different style options: basic white noise machine, portable rechargeable sound machine and clock with nature sounds.

Do you already have a sound machine? If so, what’s your favorite sound and machine style?

Hi Carmen. Wow. I think I need one of these. The loudest one possible please. I have a noisy child living next door and they are also out in the street a lot of the time so even though I don’t meditate (maybe I should find time to start), this device seems like a very good idea. Thank you for sharing.

    • Carmen

      Hi Sue,

The sounds machine can get quite loud. The one I had years ago had different sounds (ocean waves was my favorite); I didn’t use to meditate back then but I just loved listening since it helped me relaxed. I hope you get one that way you don’t have to hear that noisy child. Let me know if you get one and how it works out for you. 🙂

  • Will

Hi there, I was curious, I currently use an app for guided meditation. Would you recommend using one of these devices instead of an app? Thanks for sharing!

    • Carmen

      Hi Will,

Thanks for stopping by. If you are using a guided mediation app, this is already guiding you on how to do a certain style of meditation. The sounds machines are more for masking out noises outside, not for showing you how to meditate. However, if you are using your app and it’s noisy outside, you could use a sound machine with a White Noise or Fan sound, since this are neutral sounds you would be able to mask the noise outside and be able to listen to you app with your earbuds at a lower volume; on the long run this would help your ears. 🙂

I ahve never used or tried a sound machine. I have tried to meditate and Its not easy with outside distractions. your machine seems to be the answer to my prayers.

    • Carmen

      Hi Derek,

I know that when you are new to meditating any noise can be very distracting. The cool thing about these sound machine is that they help mask the noise outside so you don’t get that distracted. I hope you give it try. Please let me know how it goes. :-). I wish you the best of luck in your meditation practice.

  • Robert M Doyle

Wow! I never realised there was such a machine. With all the noise pollution these days,I can see this being quite an asset in the home, especially when you really want to concentrate and focus, such as in meditation. A necessity if you really want to relax. This would be great if it works. Never used one before. Thanks for sharing this; otherwise, I would not know about this product!

    • Carmen

      Hi Robert,

Yes, there is so much noise pollution these days. Back in the day, monks would meditate far away from the cities ( like in caves or in the forest). However, for most of us we can’t leave our families and find a quiet cave. These machines are great at masking out noises, you will still hear sounds (such as ocean waves, white noise, fan, rain forest, etc.), but at least they will be more pleasing sounds. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day 🙂

  • Jordan

Wow, these white noise machines sound great! And thanks for making it so easy to get to it on Amazon-I just clicked on the picture in the article (I like the dual alarm clock one) and it sent me right to the product on Amazon. Beats having to copy and paste it into their search bar.

I agree with everyone else’s comments. This information is so helpful. This website rocks!
