1. Get the Perfect Location for Your Meditation Space

Find a place in your home that you can completely dedicate for your meditation room. Ideally this room will only be used for meditation and not for any other purposes.

Having your own space for meditation is really important since it will automatically signal to your brain that this is the place where you come to relax and find inner peace.

Not only will you be able to escape from the madness of the world, but it will allow you to meditate at a deeper level.

If you are in the process of buying a house, consider a meditation room on your wish-list when selecting a new home. When we bought our house, this was definitely something we were looking for. We found the right house for us with a spare room that had the ideal space we were looking for.

You can consider the following:

Is this room comfortable?

-Does it have enough natural light coming in?

-Will it be located next to a room where there might be too much noise? (for example, next to a living room where the kids will be playing video games?)

-Does it have a/c or heat?

4. Find the Right Temperature

Temperature can affect your meditation. This is something that we may not think about, but you want to be in a place that’s comfortable for your body. The more comfortable you are, the longer you’ll want to stay there.

If you live in place that has a very hot climate, then you’ll want to make sure that your room will have the proper air conditioning so you are not melting as you are trying to meditate.

We don’t have a/c at my house and in the summer it can get quite hot. I have a standing rotating fan which works really well. I don’t like having the fan completely facing me, since I feel that this dries my eyes, but when it rotates then the air is distributed evenly.

Blinds work well for blocking the sun when the heat gets too intense. If needed, use some white curtains to reflect the heat back outside your home.

If it gets too cold, then you’ll be more concentrated on your chattering teeth rather than your breathing.

To stay warm do the following:

-Use a personal heater. By having it by your side, you can control the temperature. This is a great solution for those meditation rooms which do not have access to the centralized heat. Please make sure to always use it when you are in the room and not leave it unattended.

-At night time, use really thick curtains to shield the cold from coming through the windows.

-Use a window insulator kit. This is a clear film that is placed over the window, which will allow the light to come in, but it will block some of the cold weather.

-Replace old windows with double pane windows. This investment not only will keep you warm, but it will save money on your heating bill.

-Use a nice comfortable heated blanket.

5. How to Reduce the Noise in Your Meditation Space

Depending on the location of your meditation room, it can be quiet or the noise may cause some distraction. If you can have this room in the mountains far away from civilization go for it. However, if you are in a city you are bound to have some sort of noise one way or the other.

Here are some ideas to help reduce the noise:

-Install some soundproof panels on the walls.

-You can place your meditation room at the back of your house, that way you won’t be able to hear passing cars or people walking their dogs.

-If you have the laundry room next to your meditation room, make sure to only wash and dry when you are not meditating.

-Fans or space heaters create a subtle sound, which actually almost works like white noise. Not only will these devices help your stay cool or warm, but it will help shield some noise.

-Hang some noise reduction curtains or use a sound absorption blanket.

-Play some calming relaxing music as you meditate.

-Wear ear plugs.

-Use a noise reduction machine to mask the noise around you.

6. Choose the Right Colors For Your Meditation Room

Using the right colors can help you set the right mood for a relaxing atmosphere. Remember, you want your meditation room to feel welcoming and peaceful.

Stay away from really strong colors such as red. It’s no surprise that when you go to the gym there might even be a big wall painted in red. This is because the color red has a psychological effect which can cause the body to feel very energized. This is great when exercising since you’ll want to be moving faster, but not so great when you are trying to sit still to calm your mind.

The following colors are a good choice since they will help you relax:

White – it represents purify and peace

Lavender– it helps the mind feel calm

Light green– it has a tranquility and calming effect on the body

-Pink- it helps bring out your feminine energy. If your love this color, then you’ll enjoy reading my 10 Unique Ways to Creating a Beautiful Pink Meditation Room post.

7. Meditation Room Lighting

Light is really important when trying to determine how to create a meditation room. Besides colors, light will also help set the mood for a good meditation practice.

The best type of light is natural light. There is nothing more beautiful than doing a meditation in the morning while having the warm light of a new day coming in through your windows. This helps you get in tune with nature and it has a very relaxing effect

Not everyone will be able to meditate in the morning, so having the proper types of lamps can help.

If you meditate in the evening in a room that is too dark, this may signal the brain that it’s time to sleep. Although this is great to help you fall sleep faster, it may not be the best effect if you want your mind to be alert and focused when trying to meditate.

You can have dimmers in the room; this will help with choosing how bright you want your room to be. If dimmers are not an option, having different lamps can help. You can turn on as many lamps as you want.

Conclusion For How to Create a Meditation Room

However you decide to create your meditation room, let it be a place that allows you to go deep within yourself. This space in your home will help you have peace inside. When you are able to meditate peacefully, it will make you a happier person.

When you meditate, you can let go of all the worries in the world, and just focus on the present moment. As you become a more peaceful person, it will affect the way you react to people and situations. With a calm mind we can make better decisions and treat others better. May you have lots of love and peace in your meditation room.
